Strengthening Connections Between Kansas City and LGBTQ+ Small Businesses

Mayor Pro Tem Roundtable

The Mid-America LGBT Chamber of Commerce recently welcomed Chamber members to Spotlight for a Small Business Roundtable with Kansas City, Missouri Mayor Pro Tem Ryana Parks-Shaw. The conversation brought together LGBTQ+ business owners and entrepreneurs for an open discussion about the opportunities and challenges facing small businesses in Kansas City.

Rather than a formal presentation, the evening centered on dialogue. Chamber members shared their experiences navigating city processes, discussed barriers that can make it difficult for small businesses to grow, and offered ideas for building stronger partnerships between the City of Kansas City and the LGBTQ+ business community.

One of the primary topics of discussion was how the City can strengthen its relationship with LGBTQ+ entrepreneurs. Business owners spoke candidly about the importance of ongoing communication, increased visibility for LGBTQ+-owned businesses, and creating more opportunities for business owners to have a voice in conversations that shape local economic development.

Another significant discussion focused on LGBT Business Enterprise (LGBTBE) certification through the National LGBT Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC). Members explored how greater recognition of LGBTBE certification within city procurement and supplier diversity initiatives could create more equitable opportunities for certified LGBTQ+-owned businesses to compete for contracts and participate in public projects. The conversation highlighted both the value of certification and the importance of continuing dialogue about how it can be more effectively incorporated into local government practices.

The roundtable also provided members with the opportunity to ask direct questions, share personal experiences, and discuss practical ways the City and the business community can work together. Conversations ranged from procurement accessibility and tax barriers to creating stronger channels for feedback between City leadership and small business owners.

The Mid-America LGBT Chamber of Commerce extends its appreciation to Mayor Pro Tem Ryana Parks-Shaw for engaging directly with our members and to Spotlight for hosting the discussion. We also thank every Chamber member who participated by asking thoughtful questions, sharing their experiences, and contributing ideas that will help strengthen Kansas City's small business ecosystem.
