At the 2026 Business Pride Awards, the Mid-America LGBT Chamber of Commerce was proud to recognize Kansas Governor Laura Kelly as our Government Official of the Year. Although she was unable to attend the ceremony, we were honored to present the award to her in person shortly afterward.
Each year, the Business Pride Awards celebrate the individuals, businesses, and organizations making a meaningful difference for the LGBTQ+ community and for inclusive economic growth throughout our region. Governor Kelly exemplifies that commitment through her unwavering support of LGBTQ+ Kansans during her eight years in office.
Governor Kelly was nominated for her consistent leadership in protecting the rights of LGBTQ+ individuals, particularly through her use of the veto power to stop legislation that would have harmed the community. Most recently, she vetoed Senate Bill 244, continuing a record of standing against discriminatory legislation. During the previous legislative session, she also vetoed multiple anti-LGBTQ+ bills, preventing many of them from becoming law. Throughout her time as governor, she has remained steadfast in her support, oftentimes when doing so was politically difficult.
It was an honor to present Governor Laura Kelly with the Government Official of the Year Award and recognize her continued advocacy on behalf of the LGBTQ+ community. We are grateful for her leadership and for the example she has set throughout her time in office.
Congratulations, Governor Kelly, and thank you for your dedication to building a more welcoming and inclusive Kansas for all.
